Addition and Subtraction by Heart I

Introduction

Aligned to 1st grade Common Core fluency standards, this practice set focuses on addition and subtraction within 10. Representations used include dot diagrams, 10 frames, number bars, and number paths.

Deck Visualizations

Deck 1 - Addition

Deck 1 uses dot representations and includes addition problems where both addends are between 1 and 6, inclusive. This deck focuses on the addition strategy of counting on.

Deck 2 - Addition

Deck 2 uses 10 frames and includes all addition problems that have a sum of 10, including problems where one of the addends is 0. When a card is in Box A, B, or C, students are able to move the counters outside of the 10 frame to inside the 10 frame. Upon moving a counter, a number will appear above the 10 frame indicating the total number of counters in the 10 frame. Once a card moves to Box D and above, student interaction on the card is disabled. This deck focuses on the addition strategy of counting on and making tens.

Deck 3 - Addition

Deck 3 uses number bars and includes all addition problems that have a sum of 10, but excludes problems where one of the addends is 0. This deck presents the most abstract addition representations and is the time for students to work on automaticity and recall of the facts from Decks 1 and 2.

Deck 4 - Subtraction

Deck 4 uses 10 frames and includes all subtraction problems within 10. When a card is in Box A, B, or C, students are able to move the counters from inside the 10 frame to outside of the 10 frame. Upon moving a counter, a number will appear above the 10 frame indicating the total number of counters in the 10 frame. Once a card moves to Box D and above, student interaction on the card is disabled. This deck focuses on the property of 0, a number subtracted from itself, counting back, and adding up.

Deck 5 - Subtraction

Deck 5 uses number paths and includes all subtractions within 10, except those problems in which 0 is being subtracted. When a card is in Box A, B, or C, students are able to click on the number cards in the number path to model the subtraction problem. When a number is clicked, it becomes a lighter shade of orange. Students can only change the color of the number cards in decreasing order. Once a card moves to Box D and above, student interaction on the card is disabled. This deck focuses on a number subtracted from itself, counting back, and adding up

Deck 6 - Subtraction

Deck 3 uses number bars and includes all subtraction problems, except those problems in which 0 is being subtracted or a number is being subtracted from itself. This deck presents the most abstract subtraction representations and is the time for students to work on automaticity and recall of the facts from Decks 4 and 5.
